Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
