The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any major honors show nears, you'll find an outcry for introducing additional classifications to honor unsung work and fill the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary game development, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
