The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.
The ex-president was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.
This included trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the protest called by his offspring.
His son, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a assembly of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.
His son wrote on social media on the previous day: Will you battle for your country, or watch it all from your phone there on your sofa? I invite you to battle with us."
He said the gathering would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our country."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's determination was the potential of Bolsonaro's transfer to embassies near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a background of planning to ask for protection through a consular facility", a declaration said.
The legal document highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brasilia, is positioned around 8 miles from the former president's residence.
Worldwide Consequences
The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist American leader Trump, leading him to implement a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.
He is being held in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will have a custody hearing on the next day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be authorized to depart his residence for medical care, saying he needed regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other health problems.
Details of Guilty Verdict
He was determined responsible of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a scheme which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.
The conspiracy was stopped because it didn't receive the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was inaugurated without issue on January 1st, 2023.
But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, many his followers attacked and damaged government buildings in the federal district, the capital city.
The police stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.
The justices found that the rioters had been provoked by him whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to step in, restore order and return him to office.
At the moment, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.
The ex-leader called the court case a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the next presidential race.
